Avocet House opened in April 2005 and accommodates eight boys. It has dual registration as a residential special school and as a children’s home. The age range for admission is normally between eight and fourteen years but young people can and do stay on with us through to independence in discussion with placement authorities. Young people coming to Avocet House do so because of their need for 52 week integrated therapeutic residential placement with highly specialised education.
Avocet House occupies a large detached property in a peaceful and relaxing rural location within 20 minutes of the facilities of Norwich, Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth. The nearer small market towns of Loddon, Bungay and Beccles and easy access to the Norfolk and Suffolk coastlines and countryside give many options for responding to children’s needs.
Avocet House provides a high quality group living experience within a warm and welcoming domestic setting. The property is big enough to enable a feeling of a large family and community whilst being domestic in scale and feel. The home consists of two large and comfortably furnished living rooms, kitchen and breakfast room. A spacious south facing conservatory and patio area runs the length of the main building, within which there is a dining area where all members of the house come together for mealtimes. The conservatory looks out across a lawn to open farmland.
On the first floor there are three bedrooms, two bathrooms and toilets. On the second floor are three further bedrooms and another bathroom. Externally there is an old coach house, now refurbished and converted into a two bedroom annex, a substantial brick built Learning Centre, and an extensive garden pavilion with landscaped gardens surrounding the property. The premises are fitted out to a high standard in respect of fixtures, fittings and equipment.
